LENS Summer research school
27-29th August, Sundvolden Hotel

Introduction

The 2010 LENS summer school is organized in connection with ECSCRM 2010. The school is a part of the Light and Electricity from Novel Semiconductors (LENS) network constituted by semiconductor research groups from 13 Nordic and European universities in order to correlate and strengthen research training activities.
From a historical point of view, the present summer school continues a series of successful earlier summer/winter schools in the field of defects in semiconductors – Grövelsjön (Sweden, 2000), Vierumarki (Finland, 2003), Sundvollen (Norway, 2006), and Reykjavik (Iceland, 2008). A fundamental reason for organizing such schools is to bring research students and young researchers entering the field into close contact with experienced scientists giving lectures and guiding group work, thus creating a stimulating environment for learning semiconductor physics.
From a material point of view the scope of the present school ranges from wide band gap semiconductors, specifically SiC, GaN and ZnO to Si-based nanostructures. The school will address three major issues students often face in research projects
  • making/understanding theoretical calculations
  • producing good samples
  • doing spectroscopic measurements.
The emphasis will be on lectures, but there will also be group work.
The school is held in the weekend preceeding the ECSCRM, and the venue is the same (Sundvolden Hotel). The school starts at noon on the 27th and finishes at 2 pm on the 29th of August 2010, the same day that ECSCRM starts. It is organized in the following way:

ORGANIZATION
Aug. 27 Novel device ideas and nanostructures
Aug. 28 Theory, synthesis and spectroscopy
Aug. 29 More theory and spectroscopy

The school program is shown in more details below.

Travel

There is a direct bus route from Gardermoen to Sundvolden Hotel, as well as the possibility to travel through Oslo.

Option 1:  Directly to the hotel. Price: 230 NOK.

This bus service is run by a company called "Askeladden" and the route is called "Gardermobussen". Either of these texts should be written on the bus, and the destination display should say "Hønefoss".

The bus leaves from platform 29 outside the arrivals area at the airport and also stops directly at Sundvolden Hotel. The schedule for this bus service is listed in the tables below. Estimated travel time is 1.5 hrs.

Option 2:  Through Oslo (change of bus). Price: 290 - 320 NOK.

First, take either of these services to downtown Oslo,
  • The SAS airport express bus (140 NOK).
    • NB: NOT the bus service called NOR-WAY "Flybussekspressen".
    • Pay on the bus. Major credit cards are accepted.
    • Ask for a ticket to the bus terminal.
    • Departures about every 20 minutes.
    • Trip lasts about 45 minutes.

  • The airport express train (170 NOK).
    • Use a ticket machine or ticket booth. Major credit cards are accepted.
    • Departures about every 20 minutes.
    • Trip lasts about 20 minutes.

If you take the train, you should find the central bus station ("Bussterminalen") right next door to the central train station, see map below. There is a more detailed map in the downloadable travel guide PDF.

The bus service from Oslo to Sundvolden Hotel is called "Timeekspressen - Hønefoss / Oslo" route 171, so the destination display should say "Hønefoss". Take the bus to the stop called "Sundvollen", which is very close to the hotel. The service costs about 150 NOK.
The schedule for this bus service is listed in the table below, while the time table for the return trip is available at the hotel.
